Philip leads a group of tax professionals who specialize in the unique tax and business issues surrounding exempt organizations and their taxable affiliates.  Philip has over 38 years of experience providing a full range of tax services including: analysis and planning of reorganizations, joint ventures, affiliations, investments and other types of transactions; diagnosis and resolution of tax issues, individually, and in the context of large-scale tax evaluations and corporate compliance programs, evaluation and development of tax policies, procedures, and controls; representation before the IRS and state tax authorities; preparation of applications for tax-exempt status and private letter ruling requests; due diligence reviews; consulting on tax legislative and regulatory developments; tax department out-sourcing and co-sourcing; tax compliance reporting requirements including:  exempt organization, private foundation, corporation, S-corporation, partnership, trusts, and individual tax returns; and tax partner sign-off responsibility for all KPMG exempt organization and public sector audit clients in the Midwest in accordance with GAAP, GAAS, or GAGAS audit standards.

Professional and industry experience

  • Philip provides services for all types of tax-exempt and not-for-profit organizations including healthcare, higher education, trade associations, pension trusts, and private/corporate foundations.  
  • Government – Tax sector lead for the Midwest
  • Philip is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Capital University where he has taught courses on Exempt Organizations and Subchapter S/Advanced Pass-through Entities.  

Publications and speaking engagements

  • Philip is a frequent speaker at various forums where he speaks on topics impacting exempt organizations.
