Industries

Helping clients meet their business challenges begins with an in-depth understanding of the industries in which they work. That’s why KPMG LLP established its industry-driven structure. In fact, KPMG LLP was the first of the Big Four firms to organize itself along the same industry lines as clients.

Lisa Cabel

National Leader, Employment & Labour Law

Lisa Cabel leads the Employment & Labour law group at KPMG Law LLP, notably one of the only national, female-led labor practices in Canada. Lisa joined the firm in 2020 and has successfully built and added capabilities to their legal services offerings. She provides extensive knowledge in human rights law, with a focus on management side labor, employment, and other areas involving employee relations and pay equity. She works with a diverse array of clients across a wide range of industries—from start-ups and family businesses, to large-cap public and private sector employees and companies. Clients rely on her for collective agreement interpretation and negotiation, collective bargaining, employee discipline and termination, wrongful dismissal claims, health and safety issues, harassment claims, workplace policies and investigations, and day-to-day legal advice.

With extensive experience negotiating collective agreements in both the public and private sector Lisa has also appeared before the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, The Superior Court of Ontario, the Divisional Court of Ontario, and the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Lisa’s day-to-day practice encompasses all aspects of being an advisor and/or representative for her clients. She often works with her clients to identify risk, assist with training management trams to educate about legal risk, and develop policies and procedures to ensure that legal and statutory expectations are being met. Lisa is regularly asked by clients to speak at industry meetings in both the retail and technology industries. She has also mediated and arbitrated 100s of cases to successful resolution and is an avid public speaker.

Lisa has considerable experience in Human Rights law where she regularly appears before the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, recently acting on behalf of a respondent where the HRTO dismissed an application on the basis that an employer-sponsored insurance plan refused to pay for medical cannabis. She is also the author of Ontario Litigator’s Guide to Human Rights Practice, published in 2017 by LexisNexis Canada.

Lisa’s in-firm and external community involvement is extensive. She was appointed to Breakfast Club of Canada’s Board of Directors. Lisa is also actively involved in her professional community with formerly being an elected Executive Member of the Ontario Bar Associations Labour & Employment Division as well as an active member of the American Bar Associate.
