Simon Courtman is a Manager with KPMG’s Global Export Controls & Sanctions practice, based in Tyson’s Corner, where he focuses on export compliance, defense trade controls, and economic and trade sanctions. As a former Commodity Jurisdiction Analyst at the U.S. Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), and a former senior associate for export compliance in a U.S. law firm, Simon has significant experience, both as a regulator and as an industry advisor and advocate, in interpreting and applying U.S. export control laws and regulations and U.S. economic and trade sanctions.
Simon regularly advises clients in a variety of industries, such as aerospace and defense, manufacturing and industry, information technology, and consumer goods, in order to achieve business goals while complying with U.S. export controls and other regulatory requirements. Simon has significant experience helping clients navigate the requirements of U.S. export controls under the Arms Export Control Act (AECA), the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and other export-related Federal regulations.
Simon also helps clients understand the requirements of U.S. economic and trade sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and advises clients in national security transaction reviews by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).
