Joe Habak

Joe is a Managing Director in KPMG’s National Tax Ignition practice. He has over 13 years of experience in tax process/data improvement services, implementing tax technology and re-designing tax processes/data to improve end to end tax department performance by connecting tax data sources, processes and people into a globally aligned, centralized, standardized, automated and integrated platform. Joe leads a highly skilled and experienced global team of OWM/DataFlow subject matter experts and is honored to be recognized as the Thomson Reuters 'Taxologist of the Year' award winner in 2017-18 in the Certified Implementer Program (CIP) category (the award recognizes market leading tax professionals that excel in the use of technology to maximize tax function effectiveness).

Professional and Industry Experience

Joe is a certified implementer in Thomson Reuters’ ONESOURCE Workflow Manager (OWM) and DataFlow (DF) and is KPMG’s leader for OWM/DF. Working in conjunction with a global team of tax technical experts, he and his team have successfully designed and deployed numerous OWM/DF projects (of all levels of complexity) both in the USA and internationally in a broad range of tax types and functions, including income tax compliance/reporting; indirect and transaction based taxes; property taxes; premium taxes; tax planning; tax audits; and transfer pricing. Joe’s experience includes:

• Working with OWM’s capability for workflow, document, calendar and entity management, to help companies design and implement a ‘global tax portal.’ This included customized, standardized, automated and integrated workflows; document and due-date management tools; plus real time reporting, tracking and analytics
• Working with DF to design and improve global processes for standardized Excel tax workpaper packages and data collection / management/ consolidation/ extraction/ analysis/ reporting, allowing data to be integrated and leveraged across the entire tax lifecycle, creating a true end to end data integration solution from upstream to downstream systems (improving efficiency/productivity and reducing risk)
• Conducting training and ongoing support of tax technology and related tax process re-design to ensure changes ultimately achieve optimal processes, standardization and leading practices in tax departments
• Being an OWM subject matter expert for overall system knowledge, enhancements and functionality; internal training, skill development and mentoring; and development of OWM leading practices and tools
• Working on custom SharePoint implementation projects, providing guidance on optimal system design, content and configuration for improved process/document/data/calendar management, with enhanced reporting/dashboards, internal controls and governance.
