Joel is a Partner in KPMG’s Business Tax Services, Accounting Methods and Credit Services (AMCS) practice. Joel is the AMCS practice leader for KPMG’s Greater Mid-America Business Unit, covering KPMG’s offices and clients in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

Joel leads a team of AMCS professionals with in-depth knowledge of the tax laws and regulations in accounting methods, fixed assets, and federal business credits and incentives. The AMCS practice assists companies in all industries achieve greater tax efficiency, using a multi-disciplinary approach and a consistent tax consulting methodology to help companies manage their cash taxes, effective tax rate, and tax risks.

Professional and Industry Experience

Joel has specialized expertise in consulting related to the R&D Tax Credit and the tax considerations of research and experimentation expenditures for more than twenty years. Joel has consulted with clients across all major industries, and has led project delivery, technical issue development, and examination support and representation through the Appellate level.

Joel and his AMCS team also have extensive experience delivering AMCS tax planning projects for public and private corporate clients across a diverse range of industries. Joel frequently assists clients in areas such as:

  • Tax accounting methods, including the procedural and technical aspects of income and expense recognition, inventory accounting, and the cost recovery of capitalized items. Also, select permanent items such as the treatment of meals & entertainment expenditures.
  • Fixed assets, including depreciation, repairs and maintenance, cost segregation, construction tax planning, and other fixed asset considerations.
  • Federal business credits and incentives, including energy tax credits, the employee retention credit, and others.

Publications and Speaking Engagements

Joel is a frequent speaker at continuing professional education events, including the Minnesota Chapter of Tax Executives Institute’s (TEI) President’s Seminar, the Iowa Taxpayers Association Tax Symposium, KPMG Minneapolis’ Washington National Tax Forum, KPMG Tax Director Roundtable events, and other external and KPMG events.
