Tony Welburn
Partner, Tax
Anthony Welburn joined KPMG in 1996. Tony is a partner in KPMG’s National Banking Practice and is located in KPMG’s Atlanta office. Tony focuses on the taxation of financial instruments and institutions, and previously worked with the Financial Institutions and Products group in KPMG’s Washington National Tax office.
Tony has extensive experience advising banks on federal tax issues, in addition to advising taxpayers in various industries on financial products issues including income tax accounting for debt instruments, interest expense disallowance issues, tax hedging, asset securitization, and mark-to-market accounting for tax.
Tony is responsible for the delivery of a variety of federal tax services to clients in various industries. Tony’s current and past clients include leaders in the financial services, retail, and consumers products industries.
Tony has experience assisting clients with both tax compliance and income tax accounting issues. For example: Tony’s tax compliance experience includes the preparation and review of both federal and state income tax returns for manufacturers and various financial institutions including banks, bank holding companies, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), finance companies, leasing companies, and various special purpose entities utilized in asset securitization structures. Tony’s compliance experience includes both corporate and partnership taxation and also Tony has in-depth experience in the field of tax accounting, and has both directed the tax provision review for SEC registrants and assisted consulting clients with large-scale tax provision calculations. Tony’s tax provision consulting includes assisting clients with numerous issues including the computation of interim and year-end tax provisions, preparation of provision to return adjustments, the preparation and review of a tax basis balance sheet, and analyzing uncertain tax positions in compliance with FIN 48.
Tony has earned his BBA from Western Michigan University and has Masters in Taxation from Walsh College. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in the States of Georgia and Michigan. He is a member of the AIPCA.
